This is Part II of a series on how much it costs to dress your baby. Click here for Part I, which covers the following:
- Overall costs and breakdown for children 0-6 months old
- Overview of how we made our calculations
- 3 ways to reduce money spent on baby clothing
In Part II, we'll be covering the overall costs and breakdown for clothing your children between 6-24 months of age. All our methods of calculation and our assumptions remain the same!
How Much Does It Cost to Clothe Your Baby from 6-24 Months?
According to our calculations of the prices of toddler clothing in online stores, this is how much it will cost to clothe a 6-month old until they reach 2 years of age (spanning 18 months):
- Budget option: $170 ($9.50 per month)
- Standard option: $620 ($34.50 per month)
- Luxury option: $1500 ($83.50 per month)
Why Does It Cost Less to Dress My Baby?
If you've checked out Part I, you might have noticed that it costs more to clothe your baby from 0-6 than 6-24 months old. Why is this so?
They Grow Faster from 0-6 Months
The average baby grows about 18 cm between 0 to 6 months of age. This rate of growth slows down over time. In fact, from month 6 onwards, it will take another 15 months for your baby to grow another 18 cm. You can check out this WHO growth chart for boys from 0 to 24 months of age (the one for girls shows the same pattern).
This also means that your child will grow out of clothing slightly less quickly, and require fewer increases in clothing size on a month-on-month basis.
Our Clothing Budget Does Not Include Footwear
Toddlers typically begin to start walking between 8-18 months. Once they get comfortable on their own two feet, you'll need to purchase footwear so they can walk (perhaps even run) safely outdoors. Since the age range for walking differs from one toddler to another, and footwear comes in many forms, we decided to leave this up to your discretion.
Breakdown of Budget Option Costs
The breakdown for the cheapest option can be found below. As mentioned in Part I, these calculations were made based on Shopee searches, and did not take vouchers or cashbacks into account.
Breakdown of Standard Option Costs
You can find the prices for the standard cost option below. You might notice that pants suddenly become much more expensive at 12 months, jumping from $15 (for children between 6-12 months) to $35 SGD per pair.
As babies grow into toddlers, retailers begin to provide options to allow them to dress more like tiny adults. Rather than loose cotton pants more similar to leggings, parents can choose to dress their child in denim jeans with an elastic waist or thicker cotton trousers. Our cost per item reflects this change as well.
Breakdown of Luxury Option Costs
The costs of dressing your child in affordable luxury options can be found below. If you've already been purchasing such clothing for your baby from 0-6 months, you'll find that the absolute cost of dressing them from 6-24 months does not differ greatly.
